New Reading Assesment

Virginia Reading Assessment:   Virginia Reading Assessments will be required for elementary education, special education (with exceptions noted below) and reading specialists whose initial license applications are submitted on/after January 1 , 2005. It will also be required for individuals adding the reading specialist endorsement to an existing license. The only exemptions that will be granted for these tests will be for individuals completing VIRGINA STATE-APPROVED PROGRAMS PRIOR TO DECEMBER 31, 2004, AND FOR OUT-OF STATE TEACHERS WHO APPLY FOR LICENSURE WITH TWO OR MORE YEARS OF SUCCESSFUL, FULL-TIME TEACHING EXPERIENCE OUTSIDE THE STATE OF VIRGINIA..

Information on the tests can be found at the VRA National Evaluation Systems web site at www.vra.nesinc.com. The Board of Education approved in final review at its June 23, 2004, meeting, the ABTEL recommendation that the VRA 1 NOT be required for speech language pathologists and for teachers of early childhood special education and severe disabilities.
